WOW MS-Windows is huge!
I know it doesn't matter much to the average mac user but this Slashdot article really put the landscape of the industry in perspective, it's something about using real numbers rather than market-share percentages I've heard a hundred times.
40M Vista Licenses in 100 Days - With around 400,000 licenses a day new Vista users will take 8 weeks to beat Mac users, 4 days to exceed Mac sales and 3 days to exceed Linux desktop users." -
Three thinks struck me about this. Man that's a lot of people, man - that's a lot of money, and man - although impressive- it just doesn't matter to me (or the average mac user). I was really struck by the fact that our little biosphere is so healthy though we only take up about 4 days of MS - Windows sales.
I got my first mac at 18 (1996) and by 19 I was fully into the mac web community (I spent some time in the mountains of Colorado with zero technology - so it took a while). I was a mac mac of the worst kind, I would flame a mac basher on a forum, I would flame a mac basher in the middle of campus. It was rage against Gates. But like a short man with a fast car, it was all about insecurity. I had market-share envy.
Now I'm 29, and since then I've learned to have civil conversations with my dad about politics, and I just don't care about market-share. I'm less a fan of the Mac or Apple - I still am, but it matters less than KU basketball - and I have become a huge fan of the community, and developers. What we have, really is a biosphere. One in the order of the Galapagos, strange and wonderful things grow here. Things like second to none "news readers", " text editors", "web browsers ", "FTP Clients" and great online radio shows. We even have the best Twitter Client, and strange bird to be sure.
OSX or any OS isn't just ones working environment, it's an environment for great software and community to grow. And it appears the top 5% is the most fertile.
