What's the Weather Like in January?
I'm from Australia, so I have no real idea of what the weather will be like in San Francisco in January. I've been to Los Angeles one December and it was mild, but that's the only US California winter reference I've got. I'd appreciate any info on what to expect.
I'm going to spend about a week just being a tourist and hope to roam the streets without rugging up excessively or grappling with an umbrella.

I'd bring or buy a small "portable" umbrella - it's usually mild (upper 50's-low 60's (sorry - I've forgotten what the Celsius conversions are) and low 50's at night). It will usually rain one or two days.

Unseasonably COLD
It was unseasonably cold at this year's Macworld. I was happy I brought not only long sleeve jerseys but a fleece jacket that I ended up wearing everywhere I went.
Assume cold and rainy
My apartment literally overlooks the Moscone Center, so I speak authoritatively on this subject. In winter, highs in downtown SF usually range from the high 40s to the mid 50s, with lows around 40. This is our rainy season, so expect rain, possibly quite heavy--although so far this year it's been warmer, drier, and sunnier than usual. There are a couple of other things to consider. First, it's often very windy in SF, and the wind comes straight off the cold ocean. That plus the fog make it feel colder than the thermometer may lead you to believe. Second, there's a bizarre thing here where people feel that because of our "mild" climate they don't need any type of heating system. Unlike in a cold climate where indoors is toasty warm, here you often find restaurants and the like totally unheated. In the winter, that means COLD!
Bottom line, assume you need to dress warmly with a wind and waterproof outer layer, wear footwear that can stand to get wet, and bring a sturdy umbrella that can stand up to 40mph winds (the $3 cheapo umbrellas you buy on the street corner may or may not last till you get back to your hotel). You could luck out and find sunny skies and temps in the 60s next month, but if the weather is more typical you'll be glad you came prepared.
Excellent weather advice,
Excellent weather advice, Virginia. Especially as most things in the area of the Moscone are within walking distance, you'll walk more than you think.

Macworld Expo Week Should Be Very Nice!
The local long range weather forecasts are now coming in and the TV weather people both here in the Sacramento area and in the Bay Area are forecasting a sunny and relatively warm Macworld Expo week. The current wet weather will be moving out on Thursday, Jan. 10 and we should be dry for the next five days at least. Come Monday, high temperatures are projected to be in the low to mid 60's with overnight lows dipping into the high 30's. Expect it to be breezy on the day of Steve Jobs's keynote.
