MacMania 8

The most fun you'll have, bobbing on the ocean!

Announcement

As we announced on last week's show, Lesa has been invited to teach on the MacMania 8 Geek Cruise!

The cruise takes place from November 5th through the 15th, 2008 so there's plenty of time to save your pennies, raid the kids' college fund, have a bake sale or bump off rich relatives!

This promises to be an amazing trip - even David Pogue, who has been on several of the GeekCruises, is *especially* excited about this one.

The ship will go to start in Genoa, Italy before heading off to Naples (Italy) then Messina (Sicily), Alexandria (Egypt), Limassol (Cyprus), Marmaris (Turkey), Santorini and Katakolon (Greece) and then back to Genoa, Italy:

10 days, 8 different cities, 7 stops and 5 different countries - it will be a whirlwind tour through the cradle of Western civilization!

Shawn and Lesa would love to see you onboard - keep an eye on this forum for more info about MacMania 8!

And if you're a "cruiser", or Italian, Greek, Turkish, Egyptian, Sicilian, Cypriot or just Mediterranean in general and have any tips, tricks, ideas, places or things that are "Must Sees", please post here and let us know!

Traveling in Italy

(From Michael House)

Hi. In 2004 I spent a couple of weeks in Northern Italy, and a few days in Switzerland. It was the first time I'd ever gone someplace where I didn't speak the language (though England and Ireland come a close second). A few choice words and phrases of Survival Italian helped me enjoy my stay, chief among which was:
Non parlo Italiano (I don't speak Italian).

A couple of useful variants:
Scuzi (Excuse me/Pardon me/I'm sorry), non parlo Italiano.

And best of all:
Scuzi, Inglese (which means anyone who speaks English as a native language, regardless of nationality), non parlo Italiano.

Some other useful words:
Prego (please or thank you, depending on context);

Capisco (I understand);

Non capisco (I don't understand), optionally prefaced with "Scuzi"
again.

Hope this helps a little. I'd also recommend the Lonely Planet and Michelin Guides. And from my experience, learning a language is the equivalent of a full-time job if you want to do it right.
