Where Else Can I Stay?

I will stay at the Pickwick for MacWorld week, but I'm coming a week earlier for tourism and would like to know of any suggestions for a budget place to stay for that time. Anyone got any suggestions?

First thing would be to

First thing would be to define for us what area of town you want to stay in and how comfortable you are with public transportation.

This is where I'm a newbie.

This is where I'm a newbie. I have no idea when it comes to San Francisco. It's alien to me. It would be good to stay near the Pickwick to get familiar with the area before MacWorld. I don't know if this is a budget or upmarket part of the city (I presume it's somewhat upmarket). I was hoping that people who have stayed elsewhere might mention those options.

I'm happy to use public transport. I use nothing else here in Sydney.

OK...that's your first

OK...that's your first assignment. :) Go to your local library/bookstore and check out some travel books for SF (Lesa and I love the Eyewitnes Guides - we have seven of them!). Check out these two in paticular:

They will help you get a feel for what's in SF and the areas to stay in. Then, you can go to a web site like hotels.com to look for places to stay. You don't have to book through them but that site will give you an idea of what you'll pay.

What, Where, How? :-)

Sly's Guide to MWSF 2008 is just about ready and should be posted later on tonight once all dead links have been updated from last year's guide. It will be updated periodically, so anyone (particularly those lucky folks living in the Bay Area) with a restaurant or sightseeing recommendation, please email me directly so I can include it in the guide or just post in this forum.

Stay tuned.

No, I was the lookout/distracter so friends could get around him and sneak off campus.
