Moscone Madness 07
Do with this what you want. Couldn't sleep last night so I played reviewer:
Moscone Madness 07
Okay all you iPoders, iPhoners and general MacMacs, here's one person's grading of what was announced:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
New iPod shuffle (C)
Nothing really new except Apple has gone pastel for your feminine side.
Cool Idea:
Apple Store, go seasonal: Orange and Black for Halloween, Red, Yellow and Bronze for Thanksgiving. Silver, Red and Green for Christmas. Pink and Red for Valentine's Day. Pastels will work for Easter. Red, White and Blue for the 4th of July.
Cooler Idea:
Do two-tones for everybody's favorite NFL/NCAA/NBA/NHL/MLS/MLB/NASCAR team. Charge $100. Bet you won't be able to keep Sivler/Black in the stores. Da Raiders! (Not that I'm a fan. It's just that big, drunken, rowdy, fans who get in fights tend to lose things. And the guys are worse! Go Broncos!)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
New iPod nano (C-/D+)
My first reaction: Who cut off part of the iPod? The original had a really nice form factor,
Cool Idea:
Rotate the thing so the wheel is on the right side.
Cooler Idea:
Rotate the thing so the wheel is on the side and redesign the OS so you can choose right- or left-handed.
Coolest Idea:
Shrink the thing a little more, make it all plastic, and put the wheel on the back. Call it the Shuffle Jumbo. Bigger is always better.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
New iPod classic (B)
160GB? 160GB!? I've got an 80GB with 6,600+ songs (24 days of non-stop music), a few movies, a couple of seasons of TV shows, a bunch of audio books, and podcasts which are also stored on my 160GB MacBook Pro. Half a hard drive for my iPod. You coming out with a 360GB laptop in January? Aluminum is cool, but I'm a traditionalist.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ringtones on iTunes (A+)
Okay, "Famous Last Words" list keepers, here's a new one: "AT&T will never let Apple sell ringtones. They make too much money on them!" Goodbye Crazy Frog!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Lower Priced iPhone (C)
I give it a C because that's the average of an A from all those who can now afford it, and an F from all the "I gotta have it first" people who feel cheated. The people you really need to feel sorry for are all those who bought the 4GB for $499 because they couldn’t afford the 8GB. Discontinued item, could have saved $100, and gotten twice the phone.
FYI: We now know it costs exactly $200 to be cool.
Cool Idea:
AT&T, give everybody who signed up with an iPhone before 9/5/07 (you know who they are) $50 bucks back on their next bill. Yeah, I know it’s not AT&T’s problem, but it would 1) sooth some frayed nerves 2) be really good PR 3) may make Apple feel like they have a true partner in the iPhone. I’m sure it won’t take AT&T long to recover what they give back. Just an idea.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
New iPod Touch (B-)
Not as thrilled as I'd hoped. Like the iPhoneishness. The WiFi, ordering on iTunes, and Safari features are all cool. But $399 for 16GB? If you'd kept the camera, included email and chat, maybe. Now if they had a 4GB for $199, I'd buy it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
One thing more?
Where are my Beatles!
I've spent many a "hard day's night" walking this "long and winding road." I wanted them "yesterday." Where are they, "back in the USSR?" "Please, please me!" Oh well, Steve is the Walrus, Goo goo g'joob.
