inline text ads
I have started noticing allot of inline text ads on web sites. One such site I visit regularly is Low end mac. I went to their site on OCT 2 and found the article filled with these ads.
I understand that someone who has decided to creat web content as a full time job needs to pay the bills. That is why other than popup/popunder ads I don't block ads.
Part of the problem with in-line text ads is that the ad they are giving you is totally unrelated to the content. Also, a link in the body of the article should always link to more information about the item linked. This is the way most good web sites are designed.
For example, a link on the a word or phrase like "The Holocaust in WWII" should link to relevant information that will stimulate learning by the user.
Or if you use a term or abbreviation that the reader may not be familiar with the link or pop-over bubble should give the definition. For example if I were to write an article which included the word "Xenotransplantation" or if I were to write "When I was at NTC we slept on the ground without tents for thirty days."
As you can see from my second example the use of links in this manner the reader can learn that Xenotransplantation is the transplantation of organs or tissue between species and that NTC it the abbreviation for the National Training Center at Fort Irwin California.
I am always annoyed when i goto a site and move my mouse on a hi-lighted and linked term that I not familiar with and I get an ad instead of a definition.
So tonight I decided I would learn how to block these inline-text ads in Safari the browser I use.
You need to download a free Safari plugin called SafariBlock from FSB Software.
After it is installed you need to add the following to the filters. Each one is a separate filter.
*kontera.com*
*intellitxt.com*
*vibrantmedia.com*
it is important to type the text above exactly to completely block these ads. Be sure to include the asterisks. This will not only block all ads from these services but it will also block the website of the company that is putting the ad on the internet. What I mean by that is that after you put in these filters you will no-longer be able to get pages from kontera.com, intelitxt.com, or vibrantmedia.com.
