iPhone coming to Canada

From ZDNET

Rogers Communications said Tuesday that it has a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada. In a terse announcement, Rogers, the largest wireless provider in Canada, made the announcement and said little else. Here’s the full-text:

Ted Rogers, President and Chief Executive Officer of Rogers Communications Inc. today issued the following statement:

We’re thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later this year. We can’t tell you any more about it right now, but stay tuned.

(Shawn's Comment: Thanks Rogers! The full text of the announcement, as posted above, shows just how much concern you have for your Canadian customers....none...)

Typical Rogers Response!

Why should they be any different then their usual arrogant self Shawn!

Living in Toronto, the Mecca of the Rogers monopoly, we've all become used to this kind of attitude. There is no competition here on the cable side. Rogers was one of many cable companies when I first moved here from Montreal in 1985. Now, thanks to the CRTC, (Canadian version of the FCC), Rogers has grown into a monster, headed by that megalomaniac Ted Rogers who has to have his name and corporate logo mentioned or shown literally every few minutes. Canadians have very little choice in going any other way.

They made so much money from their monopoly that Rogers was able to not only buy the Toronto Blue Jays, but got the Skydome for a song and dance. Oh, I'll give you all a cookie if you can guess what the joint is called now. Yes, you got it right, The Rogers Centre!

Regardless, I knew it was only a matter of time until they made the deal with Apple to bring the iPhone into Canada. I mean, who the hell else even had a chance up here! It's a freakin' joke!

Well, it's about time that we got the iPhone up here. It only took about a year! We looked so bush league compared to the rest of the western world.

Problem is, Rogers will add their own price structuring for data and the phone service that it will make it a very expensive proposition indeed. It will probably put it out of my reach.

So, welcome to Canada "eh", iPhone!
Too bad that allot of us won't be able to afford you!

Wait - let's keep this in perspective. The rest of the world *wasn't* looking at Canada and saying, "Wow. Look how bush league those guys are cause they don't have an iPhone..."

From "Our" Perspective!

I meant from our perspective Shawn. Many folks here voiced their feelings about this.

It was very frustrating to see a good portion of the Western world getting the iPhone service into their country, while we lagged behind. I mean, there was/are negotiations with China for the iPhone. I know that we are a smaller market, but I mean let's get on with it!

Also Shawn, as A Canadian, you know that for decades we have been a leader in telecommunications. It was just very frustrating to know that the service would come down to who was going to handle the technical side of it, when everyone up here always knew it was going to be Rogers!

Anyway, it won't be something I will have to worry about as the price that is being bandied about here will probably be around $100/month for the service. It's not official, but it is what's being speculated here, so most probably this will price it out of my range.
